Promethazine syrup is a medication that prevents the functioning of histamine in the body which results in decrease in the allergic symptoms. Promethazine syrup is not available over the counter and there are some facts that you must be aware of before you can involved with this medication. Promethazine syrup is meant only patients aged two or greater. When Promethazine syrup is given to younger patients aged less then two, they are exposed to severe side effects which are fatal at times. Some of the potential side effects are difficult or slowed breathing, drowsiness leading to coma. This is a drug that is not advised to be taken without the guidance of a doctor. The dose prescribed for children aged above two are kept as low as possible and care is taken when they are to take other drugs while taking Promethazine syrup. Same is the case with elderly patients as like children they are also very sensitive to the effects of the drug.

Never take a drug from the Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor class of antidepressants like isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil) while taking Promethazine Syrup as it leads to drug interaction. Doing so would increase your chances of developing extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS), a condition which causes loss of control over movements.

Promethazine Syrup must not be taken by patients who are suffering from Central nervous system depression or in coma .It is not advisable to take the drug with medications like astemizole, cisapride, terfenadine, or tramadol.
