Promethazine pills is a FDA approved prescription only medication. It received it’s license in the year 1951 and has till now being effectively used for various purposes .The primary function however is its effective drug action in the treatment of allergic symptoms.
The histamine chemical in the body is what is responsible for the allergic symptoms experienced by patients .The drug Promethazine pills, works against the effects of this particular chemical to prevent the exhibition of the allergic symptoms. This is why the drug is said to be antihistamine by nature. Apart from treating various allergic symptoms it is also extremely effective when it comes to treatment of motion sickness, nausea and vomiting or pain after surgery. It is also being used as a sleep inducing drug.
Promethazine pills, apart from preventing the action of histamine has also found to be an obstacle for the action of acetylcholine which is why the drug is effective in its treatment of nausea and motion sickness. The drug being used as a sedative comes from the fact that the drug causes drowsiness.
Despite being a member of the Phenothiazine class of drugs, Promethazine pills is not used as an anti-psychotic medication like its counterparts ( Cholopromzaine and trifluoperazine) .Do try to understand that the drug is effective only in the treatment of the symptoms of allegic reactions and is not useful when it comes to treating the symptoms of conditions like asthma, pneumonia, or other lower respiratory tract infections.
Adequate research studying the effects of the drug on the user and the unborn child when taken during pregnancy have not been conducted therefore very little information is available on it. Since it is still unclear whether the drug can pass to the new born baby from the mother through breast milk it is advised that the drug be avoided by nursing mothers.
