Promethazine is a drug from the Phenothiazine family of drugs with antihistamine properties that helps the patients facing an allergic reaction to get rid off their allergic symptoms while Codeine is an opiate and hence acts as a successful pain reliever. Codeine functions are similar to that of the morphine and hydrocodone and is reported to have analgesic, antitussive, and antidiarrheal properties. The primary use of Codeine is to suppress cough and act as a pain reliever but then it is not helpful in extreme pain.
When Promethazine and Codeine is used in combination the patient is relieved of his or her cold and allergy symptoms. This combinational drug is available in the form of syrup and a teaspoon of this syrup consists 10 mg of Promethazine and 6.25 mg of Codeine. This is a prescription only drug and it is important that the drug is handled under the supervision of the doctor. The drug has the ability to alter patients mind if the dosage being taken is too high.
The main reason for the drug being made available only through prescription is because of the potential drug abuse. There has been many instances were the drug has been used for recreational purposes. Not knowing the dangers involved in the practice many people had engaged in it and had thereby experienced severe consequence. When the level of dosage becomes very high the patient is bound to experience side effects like extreme somnolence, weakness and also fatal respiratory depression in some cases.
Since both Promethazine and Codeine have sedation properties the user of the drug is advised not to combine them with other drugs that may have sedation properties. Some of the drugs that you must avoid while under the influence of the combined intake of Promethazine and Codeine are ethanol, barbiturates, anti-anxiety medications, sedatives, other phenothiazines, and narcotic pain medications.
