Phenothiazine is a class of medication in which the members of the group is employed extensively as an antipsychotic medication. Promethazine is a medication that is categorized under Phenothiazine class of drugs but unlike its counterparts it is more popularly known for antihistamine and antiemetic properties. Due to its ability to cause strong drowsiness in its users the drug is also recommended for people suffering from insomnia, if they cannot take benzodiazepines.
The drug is sold in many brand names like Phenergan, Promethegan, Romergan, Fargan, Farganesse, Prothiazine, Avomine, Atosil, Receptozine, Lergigan. The drug is available over the counter in many countries like United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Switzerland but its availability is restricted in United states of America. United Sates have made the drug available only to those patients who are able to produce authentic prescription slips.
Promethazine is used for many conditions and although it was first developed as an antipsychotic medication its use has expanded to many more areas. It is no longer being used as an antipsychotic medication and its current antipsychotic strength has been evaluated to be 1/10 of that of chlorpromazine.
